Online marketing offers enormous opportunities that increase your chances of achieving your business goals. It encompasses a wide variety of tools, including affiliate marketing. Find out what it's all about and whether it's worth investing in.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based channel based on the collaboration between an advertiser (seller) and a partner (affiliate) who acts as an intermediary in the transaction. This division brings mutual benefits:

  • the seller enjoys a greater reach of his products and greater sales,
  • the partner receives remuneration – it is calculated according to the activities.

This specificity means that affiliate marketing isn't a direct marketing technique. It's more like a model of employing independent marketers who, motivated by a commission-based remuneration system, undertake activities aimed at acquiring potential customers and persuading them to take a specific action.

  • a partner who also acts as a marketer,
  • advertisers (sellers),
  • user,
  • affiliate network settling transactions.

The principle of operation of this type of business model comes down to the following steps:

  • the seller provides a specific creation,
  • the affiliate network provides such a creation, e.g. in the form of a banner,
  • the partner places a banner on his website,
  • the user clicks on the banner, thereby visiting seller's website.

How does it look in practice?

Let's assume an entrepreneur wants to sell a self-help book. To expand sales, they partner with, for example, the owner of a website whose subject matter aligns with the book's. They post a banner advertising the book. Each click on the banner is recorded by the affiliate network. If the user decides to purchase, the entrepreneur transfers a commission to the affiliate network, which takes its share and passes the remaining amount to the affiliate.

The invaluable role of the partner network

Affiliate networks play a crucial role in affiliate marketing . Their role is to gather affiliate programs on their website, which publishers (partners) can join. In short, they facilitate the establishment of a relationship between the merchant and the affiliate. Although each party to the transaction is important, affiliate networks strive to maintain excellent relationships with publishers. They are responsible for acquiring users, through whom the network receives its share of the sales commission. Once an affiliate joins the affiliate network, they gain access to active affiliate programs. Once approved by the merchant, they can begin conducting user acquisition activities.

Forms of remuneration in affiliate marketing

Depending on the intended purpose, cooperation within the affiliate program may be settled on different principles.

  • Pay Per Sale (PPS) – is a sales commission that takes into account a certain portion of the revenue from the purchase.
  • Pay Per Lead (PPL) – is a fixed amount paid for each specific user action, e.g. filling out a form or leaving an e-mail address.
  • Pay Per Click (PPC) – is a specific amount paid for each click advertisement.

These are also types of affiliate programs, with PPS and PPL being the most popular. Due to the high likelihood of abuse, PPC is rarely implemented.

Affiliate marketing – how to reach the user?

When discussing affiliate marketing, it's worth considering how you reach users. There's no single, specific technique for attracting customers—it all depends on the individual actions taken by the affiliate. They must develop the appropriate strategy to achieve the best results.

Advertising banners

Although banner ads have passed their prime, they are still considered a good way to attract users. A visually appealing ad with an enticing message can prompt a click, ultimately leading the user to the retailer's website and deciding to make a purchase or take another desired action.

Offer rankings

Users eagerly seek advice on the best products. Partners take advantage of this by establishing ranking services, such as those for personal accounts, cosmetics, insurance, and so on. Based on specific parameters, they create product lists, which can then be purchased by clicking on the appropriate link.

Mailings

Mailings are also a form of affiliate marketing that work similarly to banners. Because the message arrives in a specific person's inbox, there's a greater likelihood of them clicking and being redirected to the merchant's website.

Why is it worth investing in affiliate marketing?

The essence of affiliate marketing means that this form of cooperation between the seller and the partner brings mutual benefits.

  • The publisher receives a commission for reaching the user and encouraging him to perform a specific action.
  • The seller sees increasing sales.

Another advantage of affiliate programs is the ability to promote an offer or increase brand awareness at low cost and risk. From the publisher's perspective, the advantage is complete freedom in terms of the actions taken. Results are key, so user acquisition can occur not only through banners but also through other methods deemed most effective by the publisher.
