Referral Marketing – Use the Power of Recommendations
Traditional marketing methods, which involve bombarding customers with persuasive messages, no longer always work. Nielsen's 2015 "Global Trust in Advertising" report clearly indicates that recommendation is the most powerful weapon in the competitive battle for consumer trust. And that's precisely what referral marketing is all about.

The power of references
How often, dear reader, have you found yourself unsure whether a given product or service is worth the price? I suspect it happens regularly. In such a situation, the simplest solution is to check online for other users' opinions, their experiences with the product, and their personal experiences. Secondly, we pick up the phone and contact a friend who has taken advantage of the offer and ask for advice. We ask a colleague for their opinion during a coffee or cigarette break. References and recommendations are currently one of the key sources of acquiring new customers. The concept of reference marketing has been known since the dawn of competition. New companies are entering the market, and the level of creativity in the fight for customer favor and meeting their needs has never been higher. Companies need a method of communicating with customers that ensures adequate effectiveness, saving entrepreneurs both time and money. The idea of reference marketing comes to the rescue here, with its comprehensive set of effective tools.
How to implement referral marketing?
The first step towards implementing a referral marketing program is to assess the company's readiness. Businesses should critically examine their offerings and assess whether the products or services are of sufficiently high quality and worth recommending. Next, the referral marketing audience should be defined and existing customers should be engaged in the referral program. This typically requires the use of a motivational element, in the form of financial compensation, which the recommender receives after a certain number of positive, successful recommendations. Interestingly, research indicates that referral programs that do not rely on financial compensation are significantly more effective. The next step is to create a clear referral procedure and ways to document the success of a given recommendation. In referral marketing, users should have a referral tool with which to measure the results of their efforts. As mentioned, the recommender should receive a reward for the recommendation. The recommender should be a customer of the company they are recommending first and foremost, and a promoter second. Never the other way around. The recommender should also know the person to whom the product is being recommended, to create a sense of comfort, security, and trust from the very beginning (friends, acquaintances, family). The final important point in any referral program is the measurability of results and its formal nature.
Reference levels
The effectiveness of a recommendation depends on who recommends the products or services to a potential buyer and how. Referral marketing theory identifies 10 levels of referrals:
Level I – the basic and least effective level of referral. This involves providing the name and contact information of someone who may potentially be interested in the product.
Level II In this case, the recommender provides the potential client with information about the offer, along with a business card, catalog, portfolio, or other promotional materials. There's a high probability that the recipient will review them and initiate contact to learn more about the products and services.
Level III – At this level, the person recommending your services also consents to being referred to by name. This is extremely effective because it increases trust and leverages the power of authority.
Level IV – written references. An extremely popular reference method, used by platforms such as Airbnb and even Uber. A win-win situation where both the service recipient and the provider benefit from a positive review publicly provided by the other party.
Level V – an introductory letter promoting a person, a brand, and the services and products they offer. Such a letter is personal and personalized, expressing a strong relationship between the brand and its author.
Level VI – Introductory call. The referrer conducts a telephone conversation with the potential client. This method is much more effective than an introductory letter, primarily due to the direct nature of the interaction.
Level VII – organizing a meeting. The referrer meets with the potential client and takes responsibility for the success of the meeting. They are the person who leads the meeting and promotes the products and services.
Level VIII – a personal meeting. The referrer introduces the client to the entrepreneur. This demonstrates true trust in both the entrepreneur and the solutions, services, and products they offer.
Level IX – meaning prepare in advance. The referrer identifies the client's needs and interests. This allows the company to prepare a personalized offer, which will be presented during the initial meeting.
Level X – the highest level of referral. The recommender has done a significant amount of work and managed to gain the consumer's full trust, allowing the transaction to be closed before the first meeting. The effectiveness of referral marketing increases with each level. However, each subsequent level of referral requires greater commitment from the recommender and the appropriate reputation and renown of the company and its offerings.
