Although affiliate marketing has been around for a long time, it's constantly evolving. This is increasing its role in online marketing as an effective tool for achieving business goals. It's worth exploring, as it holds enormous potential. Learn about the key benefits of affiliate marketing and explore its practical applications through specific examples.

Affiliate marketing – how does it work?

Affiliate marketing (also known as affiliate marketing or performance marketing) is a marketing technique based on relationships between advertisers (sellers) and partners (publishers). An affiliate network, which can be considered the organizer of the affiliate program, may also participate in the process.

Affiliate marketing is a process involving four parties:

  • affiliate network,
  • advertiser,
  • publisher,
  • user.

The advertiser has a product they want to sell. The publisher has a channel through which they can post information about the product they offer. The affiliate network helps establish a partnership between the advertiser and the publisher. The final link in this process is the user, who, after viewing the ad, clicks a link to the seller's website and makes a purchase.

Affiliate network

How to choose an affiliate network?

Choosing the right affiliate network depends on many factors, such as your industry, the type of products or services you want to promote, and the marketing goals you want to achieve.

"Choosing a trusted platform isn't easy. According to InfluencerMarketingHub, over 90% of publishers join two or more networks, and nearly 40% use three or more on a daily basis. This is most often due to the incomplete offerings and the high rates offered in the programs," explains Weronika Mazerska, Affiliate Project Manager at the Polish affiliate network MyLead.

Here are some steps to follow when choosing an affiliate network:

  1. Define your business and marketing goals: Consider whether you want to increase sales, acquire new customers, or boost brand awareness. Knowing your goals will help you choose the best affiliate network that meets your needs.
  2. Find affiliate networks in your industry: There are various affiliate networks that specialize in different industries such as e-commerce, financial services, tourism, health and beauty, education, etc. Search the internet and look for affiliate networks that have experience in your industry.
  3. Check the reputation of an affiliate network: read reviews and opinions of other users on internet forums or in social media.
  4. Pay attention to the costs: Every affiliate network charges fees for participating in the program. Read the terms and conditions and pricing carefully to avoid unexpected costs.
  5. Check out available tools and support: It is important that the affiliate network offers marketing tools such as banners, affiliate links, emails, as well as technical support and advice.
  6. Compare offers: After gathering information on several affiliate networks, compare their offers, costs, and terms. Choose the one that best suits your needs and business goals.

Choosing the right affiliate network may take some time and effort, but if well thought out, it can contribute to the success of your program.

“All the amenities we offer in MyLead are beneficial both for the publisher, who can promote programs from various niches, and for the advertiser, whose products and services are promoted by users with experience in a specific industry,” adds Weronika Mazerska.

MyLead is a platform created in 2014 that offers access to affiliate programs in several categories and payment models.

Examples of affiliate campaigns

Affiliate marketing campaigns are everywhere, and users are often unaware that clicking a specific link and making a purchase constitutes the fourth element of the chain. Therefore, it's worth learning about the most popular forms of affiliate programs, along with examples.

Advertising banners

Banner ads are one of the most popular ways to encourage clicks and visit the advertiser's website. A click generates a specific link, which the affiliate network uses to recognize that a visit to the website and a purchase was made directly from the banner.

An example of this type are banners, e.g. on websites:

  • parenting that encourages the purchase of products for babies and older children,
  • business that encourage you to purchase an e-book on topics addressed to entrepreneurs.

The most important thing is to only post the banner on websites that are thematically related to the product being offered. This increases its reach and impact.

Offer rankings

Offer lists are a good way to encourage users to click on an affiliate link. By presenting specific products in the form of rankings, we increase the likelihood of persuading users to take a specific action, such as a purchase.

Examples include websites that compare personal accounts, savings accounts, term deposits, car insurance, and so on. These are presented in the form of rankings that provide detailed information about specific products, along with options such as opening a personal account or making purchases. Clicking on a given link redirects the user to the advertiser's website (e.g., a bank or insurance company).

Note: Offer rankings should be published on a website that is thematically related to the product.

Very often, such websites are created solely for the purpose of generating revenue through affiliate marketing. Traffic to the site is driven by SEO , Google Ads campaigns, and other means.

Mailing

Advertising emails delivered to a user's mailbox may also be part of affiliate marketing. By clicking on the graphic (emails are most often in this form), the user is redirected to the advertiser's website – a special link is generated.
An example of this form of affiliate marketing is a message sent in graphic form with an affiliate link hidden underneath.

Social media

The dynamic development of social networking sites means that affiliate marketing is used in social media. You can post special links through your profile.
An example would be an affiliate link to a designer ceiling lamp posted on the profile of an interior design studio, etc.

Blog

Affiliate links can be placed on your blog quite naturally . The possibilities are wide-ranging, from linking them to graphics or logos to linking to specific products.

An example would be a beauty blog promoting cosmetics from online stores. Simply create a ranking of such products and link to the name.

Affiliate Marketing - Benefits

Advantages of affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a marketing technique that brings benefits – from the point of view of the advertiser and the publisher.

Advertisers can take advantage of a cost-effective and effective way to promote their products — without having to spend time on advertising . Publishers can earn money by promoting products through their channels. At the same time, they decide which channel to use—the key is to leverage the most effective ones.

It's worth emphasizing that affiliate marketing is an effective form of advertising. Based on a commission system, it incentivizes the publisher to only engage in activities that actually help acquire customers and increase sales of the advertiser's product . Therefore, the seller can be sure that the publisher is working to their full potential to promote the product or service.

Frequently asked questions about affiliate programs

Publishers can promote affiliate links in many ways. Common examples include:

  • Thematic blogs and review portals: The author places a link to the product in the text of the review or guide.
  • Social media and influencer marketing: Creators on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube share links or dedicated discount codes in video descriptions and stories.
  • Coupon and cashback services: Discount aggregation portals that redirect users to stores in exchange for a commission or a refund of part of the customer's expenses.
  • Price comparison websites: Websites (e.g. Ceneo) that earn money by redirecting customers to a specific store offering a given product.

One of the oldest and largest global programs is Amazon Associates. The Allegro Polecam program, which allows users to earn money by recommending products on the platform, is extremely popular in the Polish market. Many brands also operate within specialized affiliate networks (such as Awin or Webepartners), which bring together hundreds of programs in the fashion, cosmetics, and consumer electronics/appliances industries.

For e-commerce companies, affiliation is an exceptionally secure promotional model. Key advantages include:

  • Minimal financial risk: Payment is made only for the actual effect (e.g. a completed purchase), not for the mere display of an ad.
  • Increased sales and reach: The store reaches new, precisely selected audiences through external creators.
  • Building authority: A product recommendation from a trusted blogger or influencer works more effectively than a traditional banner ad.

For online creators, affiliate marketing is a great way to monetize their business. The main benefits include:

  • No barriers to entry: You don't need to create your own product, have start-up capital, a warehouse, or worry about logistics and shipping.
  • Passive Income Potential: A well-positioned article with affiliate links can generate profits for months or even years after publication.
  • Independence: The publisher decides which products to recommend and how to communicate with its community.

Absolutely. Small, highly specialized websites or social media profiles often achieve better affiliate results (conversion rates) than large, general-interest portals. A narrow audience trusts a niche expert, making purchasing decisions based on their recommendations more readily and quickly.

Summary

The above article covers the following topics:
