Google Ads or Facebook Ads? Which to choose?

Businesses planning their first paid campaign most often face a dilemma: Google or Facebook advertising? These two platforms dominate the digital advertising market, together accounting for over 50% of global online advertising spending (WPP Media, "This Year Next Year" forecast, 2025).

However, they operate on different principles, reach audiences at different times, and require a different approach to budget planning. In this article, we'll analyze the differences between Google Ads and Facebook Ads , compare costs and performance indicators, and finally, suggest which situations each platform is best suited for.

How does Google Ads work?

Google Ads is a system of ads displayed in Google search results, the Display Network, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and Google Shopping. According to StatCounter data from March 2026, Google accounts for nearly 90% of global search engine traffic.

The most common model used for search engine campaigns is the CPC (cost-per-click) model, although Google Ads also supports other pricing models – including CPM, CPV, and strategies based on target CPA and ROAS – depending on the campaign type and bidding strategy.

Ads are selected based on an auction that considers both bid and quality score. Google offers a variety of formats, from text ads in search results, to product ads on Google Shopping, to video campaigns on YouTube.

Automation and AI – new standards for Google campaigns from 2025

From 2025 onwards, the system will focus heavily on automation. Performance Max campaigns optimize ad display across multiple Google channels simultaneously, while the AI Max for Search mode – launched in May 2025 – achieves 14% more conversions at a similar customer acquisition cost, according to Google data.

How do Facebook Ads work?

Facebook Ads (officially Meta Ads ) is an advertising system spanning Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network. Unlike Google Ads, ads aren't based on specific user searches, but are displayed based on a user's demographic profile, interests, and online behavior.

In total, Meta apps (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger) have 3,56 billion active daily users (Meta, Q1 2026). In Poland, in January 2026, the Facebook app alone was used by 22,8 million people per month (Gemius, "Social Media 2026" report), and the platform's advertising reach at the beginning of 2025 was 18,7 million users, growing year-on-year by over 9% (Datareportal/We Are Social, March 2025).

The power of Facebook Ads lies in its targeting. Advertisers can precisely define their target audience based on age, gender, location, interests, and even life situation, for example, targeting people planning a wedding or new parents. Since March 2025, Meta has limited some of its detailed audience exclusion options, placing a stronger emphasis on broad targeting and creative quality, powered by the Advantage+ algorithm.

Differences between Google Ads and Facebook Ads

The Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads comparison rests on one fundamental difference: Google is more likely to respond to existing purchase intent, while Meta is more effective at building interest and supporting earlier stages of the sales funnel. A user who searches for "women's running shoes size 39" has a specific need and is close to making a decision.

Meta Ads – from generating momentum to capturing demand

A person scrolling through their Facebook feed isn't necessarily looking for shoes, but an attractive ad can spark the desire to buy. Meta also helps capture existing demand – remarketing, Custom Audiences, and Lookalike Audiences allow you to reach people already interested in a given product category.

Let's look at the specific differences:

  • Targeting: Google relies on phrases entered into the search engine, Facebook relies on user profiles (demographic data, interests, behavior). Google more often reaches people with formed purchasing intentions; Facebook allows for building this intention, but it is equally effective in remarketing and reaching people already familiar with the product category.
  • Ad formats: Google offers text ads, product ads (Shopping) and Performance Max multi-channel campaigns covering multiple Google services simultaneously. Facebook operates mainly through images and videos – Stories, Reels, carousels and feed ads, where the quality of the graphic creation is decisive.
  • Path to conversion: In Google Ads, the purchase path can be short for products with a simple decision-making process—the user searches, clicks, and buys. On Facebook, the conversion cycle is typically longer: the user sees an ad, visits the website, returns via retargeting, and only then completes the purchase.
  • The role of AI: Both systems are investing heavily in automation. Google is focusing on Performance Max and AI Max for Search, while Meta is focusing on Advantage+ campaigns and the Andromeda algorithm.

How much does it cost? Comparison of indicators

Cost is one of the first factors considered when choosing a platform. The data below comes from a WordStream/LocaliQ report for April 2024–March 2025 and covers the US market, but the proportions between platforms are similar in most markets.

The average CPC for Google Ads on the Search Network was $5,26, while for Facebook Ads (traffic campaigns) it was $0,70. The difference is noticeable, but it doesn't tell the whole story, as Google users are more likely to have high purchase intent. The average conversion rate for Google Ads was 7,52%, and the CPL was $70,11. On Facebook (lead campaigns), the conversion rate was 7,72%, and the CPL was $27,66. Facebook appears to be cheaper, but the definition of conversion varies across platforms and industries.

According to the same report, Google Ads CPC increased year-over-year by an average of nearly 13% across 87% of industries, while Facebook Lead Ads saw a more modest increase of just over 2%. At the same time, 65% of industries improved their Google Ads conversion rates.

When to choose Google Ads?

Google Ads will work better in a few specific situations.

  1. First, when you offer a product or service that people are actively searching for in search engines – from plumbing services to law firms to electronics.
  2. Secondlywhen you want to reach people with formed purchasing intentions – especially in industries with a relatively short decision-making cycle.
  3. Thirdly, when you operate in e-commerce and want to use Google Shopping Product Ads, which display the image, price and name of the product directly in the search results.

Google Ads is also a good choice for remarketing campaigns on the Display Network – you can show ads to people who visited your store but didn't complete a purchase. The minimum budget required for Google Ads campaigns to produce measurable results depends on the industry, the competition in the auction, and the number of conversions the algorithm needs for optimization.

How much does advertising cost? Budget versus the specifics and scale of your business.

A local service provider can achieve satisfactory results with a few hundred zlotys per month, while an online store in a competitive category will require many times greater expenditures.

When to choose Facebook Ads?

Facebook Ads is a better choice if you're just building brand awareness and want to reach people who aren't yet familiar with your offerings. The platform is ideal for promoting products with strong visual appeal—clothing, cosmetics, home furnishings, food—where an attractive photo or short video can capture attention and spark a purchase impulse.

Facebook Ads is also a good option for those with a limited budget. A campaign can be launched for just a few hundred złoty per month, and the lower cost-per-click allows for faster testing of different audiences and creatives. For companies with niche or lesser-known products—those that users don't search for on Google because they don't yet know about them—Facebook is one of the most effective channels for acquiring first customers, although TikTok Ads, YouTube, and influencer marketing can also be effective.

It's also worth remembering the demographic shift. The largest group of Facebook users in Poland today are those aged 25-49, with a particular overrepresentation of those aged 30+ (Gemius report "Social Media 2026"). If your target group falls within this range, Facebook will help you reach them effectively. Younger audiences (aged 18-24) are more easily found on Instagram or TikTok, although both platforms are accessible through the Meta advertising system.

Is it worth advertising on both platforms?

Facebook Ads or Google Ads – Which to Choose? The most effective strategies in 2026 involve the interplay of both systems: Facebook builds brand awareness and generates interest, while Google captures traffic from people who, influenced by social media advertising, start searching for a product in a search engine.

How to wisely divide your budget between different advertising channels?

If your budget allows for campaigns across both channels, it's worth allocating the majority of your funds to the platform that better aligns with your business goals and a smaller portion to the other, comparing results every few weeks. The optimal split depends on your industry and margin. It's best to measure effectiveness by customer acquisition cost (CPA) and return on advertising spend (ROAS), rather than cost-per-click alone.

Google Ads or Facebook Ads – what to choose to start with?

There's no universal answer to the question of where to advertise—Google or Facebook. The choice depends on budget, industry, product type, and company development stage. For businesses with products that people actively search for in search engines, Google Ads will allow them to reach audiences closer to making a purchasing decision.

For brands building awareness or promoting visually appealing products, Facebook Ads will be more cost-effective initially. Companies with sufficient resources should consider combining both channels – in 2026, Google and Facebook advertising will no longer be competitors, but two elements of the same strategy.

Frequently asked questions about Google and Meta Ads

Google Ads responds to the user's existing purchasing intent (reaches people who are already looking for a given item), while Facebook Ads (Meta Ads) focuses on building interest and creating demand (reaches people based on their profile).

Google Ads is based primarily on keywords entered into the search engine. Facebook Ads targets ads based on user profile data such as age, gender, location, interests, behaviors, and life situation.

Google Ads primarily offers text ads, product ads (Shopping), and multi-channel Performance Max campaigns. Facebook Ads relies on visual and video messaging, using ads in the feed, Stories, Reels, and carousels.

In Google Ads, the path is typically shorter because the user is searching for a specific product with the intention of purchasing. On Facebook, the conversion cycle is typically longer: the user acts on impulse, visits the website, and often buys only after returning via retargeting.

According to the data cited in the article, Facebook Ads offers a significantly lower average cost-per-click ($0,70 for traffic campaigns) than Google Ads Search Network ($5,26). However, the higher price on Google is offset by a stronger purchase intent among audiences.

When you offer products or services that customers are urgently and actively searching for online (e.g. plumbing services, a specific product with a formed purchase intention).

When you want to build brand awareness, promote niche or highly visual products that people aren't yet looking for themselves, or want to trigger a buying impulse in the recipient while browsing social media.

The most effective strategy is the synergy of both platforms: Facebook Ads builds awareness and creates a need, and Google Ads captures the demand generated this way when the user starts searching for an offer.
