Learn about Google Trends using Game of Thrones as an example

"Game of Thrones" fans have had to wait almost two years for the next season of this iconic series. The premiere of new episodes has been a hot topic for several weeks now, especially since Season 8 is also the last. The series' immense popularity is evident in Google searches and Google Trends.

According to statistics presented by HBO, the final episode of the series' seventh season was watched by over 16 million viewers. However, the viewership record was broken by the first episode of the eighth season, which was watched by over 17,4 million people on its premiere day. This raises the question of whether such high viewership translates into an increase in the number of search queries directed to Google. Google Trends , a practical tool that allows you to understand the interests of search engine users, will help answer this question.

Google Trends is an incredibly helpful tool for understanding Google's search statistics . The search engine collects millions of search queries from internet users around the world every day. What does Google Trends show?

This tool presents Google trends related to interest in a specific topic over time and geography. It bases its information on search engine data. Using this tool, you can learn, among other things, whether a specific phrase:

  1. is it enjoying growing popularity, or is interest in it declining?
  2. is seasonal, etc.

An interesting option is the ability to compare different keywords in terms of popularity. This allows you to choose a phrase that will be more popular with specific audiences, for example, in a specific area.

Google Trends – how to check?

Google Trends is a very easy-to-use tool. Its intuitive nature makes it easy to use. Right from the home page, you can see which phrases are most frequently entered in Google – simply enter a specific phrase in the blue box with a magnifying glass.

On the home page you can also get information about:

  1. what are the most frequently searched Google phrases that have been gaining popularity recently,
  2. what Google search trends look like in particular years.

Both aspects constitute a valuable source of knowledge, which is useful, among other things, when developing a marketing strategy or implementing positioning activities.

The most frequently searched phrases on Polish Google in 2018

The "Year in Search" section is a way to discover the most frequently entered phrases in Google in a given year. In 2018, topics that gained popularity in Poland included:

  • 2018 FIFA World Cup,
  • Avicii,
  • Local Government Elections 2018,
  • Tomasz Mackiewicz,
  • About You.

How to read Google Trends?

Obtaining data on the number of search queries in Google over a specific time period is straightforward. The information is presented in a graph, and you can further refine your results using the filters provided. Simply specify, among other things:

  • a specific region, e.g. Poland,
  • time range, e.g. last 1 hour, last 7 days, last 5 years,
  • the thematic category to which a given phrase belongs,
  • search engine, e.g. Google, YouTube, Image.

The tool also displays similar topics and similar queries – it provides the most frequently searched words on Google.

How to use Google Trends using Game of Thrones as an example?

It's easiest to discuss Google trends using a specific example. We'll present Google search engine statistics for a phrase related to "Game of Thrones."

We enter the phrase "Game of Thrones" into the search bar. We select filters for region (Poland), time range (April 13, 2019 - May 16, 2019), and topic category (movies). Google search trends are as follows:

Game of Thrones on Google Trends

Analyzing the above chart, a certain relationship can be observed: the greatest interest in this topic is visible on the day of the premiere of individual episodes of the 8th season of the series in Poland:

  • April 15,
  • April 22,
  • April 29,
  • May 6,
  • May 13th.

The highest number of Google searches didn't occur during the premiere episode. As the chart shows, "Game of Thrones" was the most searched term on Google only on the day of the season three premiere.

The popularity of the phrase "Game of Thrones" can also be viewed from a longer time perspective. The graph of interest in this keyword over the last five years is as follows:

popularity in Google Trends

And in this case, Google search trends coincide with the broadcast dates of the premiere episodes of "Game of Thrones" of subsequent seasons.

Google Trends also allows you to compare the volume of Google searches for two different phrases. In our example, we're comparing "Game of Thrones" with "House of Cards."

Game of Thrones vs. House of Cards comparison
As can be seen from the above, "Game of Thrones" is much more popular – it is this phrase that achieves much greater interest in its peak moments.

Google Trends and Adwords

Google Trends and Keyword Planner are two completely different tools. While they both provide a wealth of important keyword-related information, they operate on completely different principles.
The primary difference is how a given keyword's popularity is calculated and displayed. While Google Trends highlights Google search engine statistics and highlights Google search trends, Keyword Planner displays the total volume of searches on Google.

With this in mind, both tools should be considered complementary. This allows you to get much more out of Google search and learn a great deal about the interests of users, some of whom are potential customers.

Google Trends and Facebook

Google Trends is a tool you can use to, among other things, conduct more effective social media activities. By observing Google search trends, you can identify topics that are popular among internet users and, for example, create posts on your Facebook page based on them.

Google Trends and SEO

When it comes to Google Trends, SEO is perfectly supported by this tool. Although it doesn't provide a specific number of searches related to a given phrase, it does provide a good indication of Google trends for that keyword. Therefore, it's worth using this tool – it's a great complement to other tools, such as the Google Ads keyword planner, answerthepublic.com, or the paid SEMSTORM.
